You'd think I'd get a hang of blogging by now but what do you know, I seem to have made more blogs than I can keep a track of! I cant promise I will be here posting recipes daily, but I am hoping I can do so once a while, just to document my own journey as a 'so - so' home cook to an awesome one in say...three years? (Or I'll just keep going till the day I serve a three course meal to a bunch of people who have nothing to gain from telling me that I am a fabulous cook!)
This is a new recipe I tried today when I left curd out of the refrigerator by mistake and it got too sour. The recipe is called 'Khatta Mag' or 'Khatta Moong Kadhi'. I believe it is of Gujarati origin.
This is a protein rich recipe. The high fiber content of moong and its low glycemic index makes this dish suitable for diabetics as well. Moong dal is highly praised by Ayurveda practitioners and is compulsorily used in an Ayurvedic detox plan (Moong soup).
Use sour curd for this recipe. Keep normal curd outside the fridge for a few hours and it should be fine to use.
To serve 2 and a child I used the following measurements:
1/2 cup whole green mung
1 cup curd
2 tablespoons gram flour
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chilli powder - as per your taste
Pinch of hing
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon jeeera/cumin seeds
1 teaspoon ginger, grated finely
2 green chillies, chopped fine - optional
1 teaspoon oil
A few curry leaves
salt to taste
Method:
Soak moong dal for around 4 hours and cook it till it is soft.
To the curd, add gram flour, turmeric powder, heeng, red chilli powder, salt and around a cup of of water. Whisk this mixture to remove lumps.Add the cooked moong dal to this.
Heat the oil for tempering and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves.
Add the curd and moong mixture into the tadka.
Allow the mixture to come to a boil on low heat. Once the mixture comes to a boil, wait for 2 more minutes and turn off the heat.

Khatta Moong Curry |
We had this with plain hot rice but I think rotis may go well with it too.
PS: Apologies for the poor picture quality. Please bear with me. Alternately, you could gift me a new phone :-)
